William Penn Morgan was born in London in 1826. At age fourteen, he went to Paris and studied in the atelier of Thomas Couture and the French government school at Le Havre.  Not wanting to return to England, he spent the 1840s as a sailor.  In 1851, he arrived in Brooklyn, New York City.  In 1852 he began submitting paintings to the annual Academy exhibitions. He became accomplished artist and earned a distinguished reputation for portrait painting, but today is best known for his domestic genre subjects. Upon his death, the minutes of the National Academy described Morgan “as a painter of ‘sterling merit’ whose treatment of subjects ‘reflected the sensitiveness and refinement of his own nature’.
