Architecturally Styled 19th Century Jewelry Casket

This rare box shaped like a building features inscribed bronze reliefs of the well-known original Flemish castle of Herlaar in Flanders, Belgium, flanked by full length portraits of named Renaissance noblemen in armor. The ‘roof’ opens to an interior lined with purple velvet. The box may well date to the time of Leopold I, first King of the Belgians (1790-1865) during which reign the country experienced a surging interest in its national history.
