19th Century Chinese Export Paper Mache Figure, Imperial Servant with Card Tray
Standing 24 inches tall this is quite a rare example of Chinese papier mâché made for the British market. The figure shows an imperial servant wearing a hat over his queue holding forward a card tray of English fashion. The queue or cue is a hairstyle worn by the Jurchen and Manchu people of Manchuria, and later required to be worn by male subjects of the Qing dynasty. His three part attire is decorated with gilt and lacquer. The figure is set in a later expanded base.
