Portrait of likely Queen Elizabeth I, Manner of Hans Holbein the Younger
SOLD. ‘Portrait of likely Queen Elizabeth I of England’.
Style of Hans Holbein the Younger, German 1497-1543.
27.5 x 33 in. oil on relined canvas, late 17th century.
The sitter bears striking resemblance to the aging Queen Elizabeth I of England, painted in the style of Hans Holbein the Younger by a less accomplished follower. The closed Flemish lace ruff, the compactness of the rose and the design of the jewelry point to early Northern Renaissance, even if the actual painting likely is executed in the late 1600’s. The uniformity and the lack of detail and structure of the headdress/hair area points to the possibility that this area of the painting was left unfinished.
