‘Sheep in the Forest’
Follower of Balthasar Paul Ommeganck, Flemish, 1755-1826
Oil on relined canvas, 19.5 x 24 in. unsigned, late 18th Century
Towards the middle of the 18th century a new interest in nature and domestic scenes followed ‘the time of enlightenment’ spearheaded by philosophers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Balthasar P. Ommeganck was like many other artists part of that movement. He often focused on the rendering of the animals coat and gained great popularity in his native country, France and England.
